Home Page

The home page is your gateway to the i-TRAFFIC website. You can always get to the home page by selecting the “HOME” link at the top of the left-hand column of every page. The other way to get to the home page from anywhere in the site is to click on the SANRAL logo in the top left corner of the page.

View information for your region: To view region-specific information on this website, choose your region using the circles located at the upper right-hand corner of every page.

When you select a region, the circle for that region will light up, indicating the region you selected.

Once a region is selected, the information displayed throughout the website will be specific to that region. If you want to see information for another region or from all of South Africa, you can change it at any time from any page by selecting a different circle.

Main menu


Using the main menu at the top of every page, you can navigate to many sections of the i-TRAFFIC website, including: Traffic, Public Transport, Extras, About, and My i-TRAFFIC. Hovering over any of the main menu items using the mouse will cause a drop-down menu will appear, showing further navigation options. Simply click on the page you wish to navigate to.

  • Traffic provides information about the roads in the region, ranging from advisory alerts to travel times and map information.

  • Public transport provides links to various local and intercity transportation providers, including airports, bus transit and rail transit information.

  • Extras includes downloads, SANRAL policy information, and API documentation for developers. To access the API documentation on the Developer Portal, you must create a Developer Account. Click on “Developer Portal” under the Extras menu to sign up.


  • The About menu is your source for SANRAL news, contact information, partner information, and frequently asked questions.

  • My i-TRAFFIC allows you to get traffic information tailored to your personal needs. For example, you can receive notifications about the road conditions for your route from home to work at a particular time every morning by email or SMS text message.

    Using your My i-TRAFFIC account, you can customize your preferences so we will send you the traffic information that is relevant to you, by email or SMS. There are many other features available to personalise your i-TRAFFIC experience so that the traffic information provided is of the greatest benefit to you.

    You can sign up for a free account or login to My i-TRAFFIC from any page on the website using the My i-TRAFFIC banner located above the main menu.


    If you forget your password, simply click the Forgot my password? link, and we will email your password to your email address.


Website features

  • A search bar in the upper right hand corner of the page is provided to allow you to search the website for any information you might need. Enter your search keyword and click the magnifying glass search icon.

  • If you ever need to print a page, click the grey printer-friendly button on the upper right hand side of the window, below the search bar. You will be taken to a page specifically designed for printing website content.

  • See the Site Map (link at the bottom of every page) for a complete list of pages available for navigation.

  • Links to Twitter and RSS feeds, a feedback form and terms and conditions are also available at the bottom of the page.

Help - List Pages

All of the information displayed on the live traffic map is also available in text lists that can be customized for certain regions, roads and directions.

The following information (under Traffic in the main menu) is provided in list format:

  • Incidents
  • Road Conditions
  • Road Work / Closures
  • Cameras
  • Message Signs
  • Travel Times / Traffic Speeds

Each list page has a set of drop-down menus at the top of the page under the Options Select bar which allow you to filter the information displayed. Clicking on the while options bars will cause a drop-down menu to appear, displaying the options you can select to narrow the range of content displayed in the list. You can use any combination of options to refine your search.

You can sort the list according to a desired column by selecting the header of any column of the list. The header of that column will become highlighted, to indicate your selection. In addition, an up or down arrow will be displayed on the column indication whether the list is sorted in ascending or descending order. You may click on the selected header again to toggle between ascending or descending order.

Help - Traffic Map

The interactive traffic map shows up-to-the-minute information about traffic on major roadways in South Africa. The map is updated every minute and displays the region you choose on the top right corner of the page. It can help you plan your trip and avoid delays.

The traffic map page provides graphical and text information about travel times, road conditions, incidents, road closures, highway camera images, message sign content and traffic speeds. It also gives you access to information about roadside assistance and toll roads.

The information displayed on the map is also available in list format via the links on the left side of the page for Incidents, Road Conditions, Road Work/Closures, Cameras, and Travel Times.

You can easily navigate around the traffic map using the pan and zoom functions on the upper left side of the map. Use the “+” to zoom in and the “-“ to zoom out, or slide the cursor between the “+” and “-“ to zoom in and out. You can also move around the map using the arrow keys or by clicking and dragging to navigate around the map.

The inset map on the lower right side of the main map shows your map view in relation to the larger available area. You can use the inset map to change the location of the main map by selecting one of the regions.

Map Content

The map is interactive: when you hover over an alert icon on the map, a small alert hover box will appear displaying details about that icon. The window will disappear when you move the mouse away from the icon. To keep the window open, click the icon instead of hovering over it. Close the window by clicking on the "CLOSE" link in the lower right hand corner of the window.

To control what appears on the map, hover over the Map Legend stub and it will drop down, displaying a list of map elements that can be turned on or off. Select the information you want displayed on the map by checking the boxes beside each item.

Map Legend Options

Traffic Speeds/Travel Times - when this item is selected, certain roadways will be colour-coded to indicate the current average traffic speed on the road segment according to the colours shown in the legend. If you click the road segment, a pop-up will appear with information about the current average speed on that segment.

To show the location of Cameras on the roadways, check the box beside Cameras on the Map Legend. The camera icon camera icon appears on the map wherever there is a traffic camera.

View the current message on Message Signs on the highway by checking the box beside the Message Sign icon in the legend. Message Sign icons message sign icon appear on the map wherever there is a message sign displaying a message.

To show the location of Incidents on the roadways, check the box beside Incidents on the Map Legend. The Incident icon incident icon appears on the map wherever there is an ongoing incident.

To show the location of Roadwork/Closures on the roadways, check the box beside Roadwork/Closures on the Map Legend. The Roadwork/Closures icon roadwork/closure icon appears on the map wherever there are ongoing road works or road closures.

To show the location of Road Conditions on the roadways, check the box beside Road Conditions on the Map Legend. The Road Conditions icon road conditions icon appears on the map wherever heavy traffic or potentially hazardous road conditions are present.



Route Planner

Using the route planner you can view detailed traffic information, including travel time, distance, incident, road works, and road conditions along a route between the start point and destination of your choice.

To use the route planner, enter the addresses of your desired start point and destination, and then click on the "Generate Route" button. Alternatively, you can create a route by selecting your start and end locations from the traffic map. To select a start location, right click on the traffic map at the desired location and choose an option from the menu that appears. Then do the same for your desired end location.

Once you have selected your route, the route summary tab will display information including the route distance and travel time on freeways along the route.

Detailed information including a description of incidents, road works, closures, and exceptional road conditions along your route can be found under the route details tab. This tab will show a breakdown of your route according to the major interchanges that lie along your route.

To print a copy of your route traffic information, first select the tab that you wish to print and then click on the printer icon to the right of both tabs.

Although you can choose any locations for the start and end points of your route, traffic information, including total freeway travel time, can only be provided for the section(s) of your route which fall within the coverage area of i-TRAFFIC. You can see which section(s) of your route are covered in the route details tab. To see the coverage area for traffic data, click here.

Help - My i-TRAFFIC

My i-TRAFFIC allows you to get traffic information tailored to your personal needs. For example, if you commute each day, you can set your trip from home to work as a personal My i-TRAFFIC route.

You can tell My i-TRAFFIC when you wish to be alerted by SMS or email to traffic conditions along any of your personal routes. For example, you can choose to receive a notification when there is an accident, road closure, and/or slow moving traffic along any one of your personal routes.

In addition, creating a personalised route allows you to bookmark a route for quick viewing on the Traffic Map. You can see the traffic details for any of your personal routes at the press of a button. You can also access a travel time summary of all the personal routes you have created.

Help - Manage My i-TRAFFIC

The Manage My i-TRAFFIC page is your control centre for personalised i-TRAFFIC information. This page allows you to view and manage your personal routes and traffic alerts. For example, if you commute each day, you can set your trip from home to work as a personal My i-TRAFFIC route.

Using this page, you can tell My i-TRAFFIC when you wish to be alerted by SMS or email to traffic conditions along any of your personal routes. For example, you can choose to receive a notification when there is an accident, road closure, and/or slow moving traffic along any one of your personal routes.

In addition, creating a personalised route allows you to bookmark a route for quick viewing on the Traffic Map. You can see the traffic details for any of your personal routes at the press of a button. You can also access a travel time summary of all the personal routes you have created.


Manage My Routes

Using the Manage My Routes tool, you can create, edit, delete, view and set alerts for your personal My i-TRAFFIC routes. You can also see travel times and distances for each of your personal routes.

To create a new route, click the "Create New Route" button at the bottom of the Manage My Routes tool. This will take you to a map where you can select the start and end points of your new route.

To modify a route after it has been created, click the "Edit" button for that route.

To delete a route, click on the "Delete" button for that route.

To view a route on the Traffic Map, click the "View" button for that route. Creating a route allows you to bookmark routes for quick viewing on the Traffic Map page.

To set an alert for a route, click the "Create Alert" button next to the route of your choice. This will take you to a page where you can tell My i-TRAFFIC what information you are interested in receiving alerts for.

Manage My Alerts

The Manage My Alerts tool allows you to view and modify all the alerts you have created, and set your weekly and monthly SMS alert limits. You can also choose to receive Emergency and Travel Advisory alerts here.

To set your SMS alert limits, select your desired limits from the drop down menus and click the "Set Alert Limits" button. This will limit the amount of SMS text messages you get every week and every month. If either of the limits are set to zero, you will not receive any alerts by SMS.

To choose to receive Emergency and Travel Advisory alerts, click on the "Create Emergency/Travel Advisories Alert" button at the bottom of the Manage My Alerts tool. This will take you to a page where you can select your Emergency and Travel Advisory alert options.

To create a new traffic alert, you need to use the Manage My Routes tool (see above).

To edit an existing alert, click on the "Edit" button next to the alert.

To delete an alert, click on the "Delete" button for that alert.

Help - Manage Alert

This page allows you to set the options for traffic alerts that you wish to receive. In the topmost section, you can select the which time of the day, and which days of the week, you are interested in receiving traffic information for your personalized routes.

For example, if you are setting an alert for your morning commute to work, and you only wish to receive alerts between the hours of 6 am to 10 am on week days, you would select 06:00 under the "From" drop down list and 10:00 under the "To" drop down list. You would then select the check-boxes for weekdays only.

Notification Triggers

This section allows you to select what types of traffic events you wish to receive notifications for. For example, you can choose to receive alerts for slow traffic, road closures, accidents, hazardous road conditions, or any combination thereof.

Available Options
Travel Time Select this option to receive notifications when the average speed along your route falls below the selected percentage of the speed limit during the selected time period.
Travel Speed Select this option to receive notifications when the average speed along your route falls below the selected speed, during the selected time period.
Incidents Select this option to receive notifications when an incident, such as an accident, occurs along your route during the selected time period.
Road Work Select this option to receive notifications when any road works or road closures are scheduled to occur along your route during the selected time period.
Road Conditions Select this option to receive notifications when traffic congestion or potentially hazardous road conditions are reported along your route during the selected time period.

In addition, you can select the severity of events for which you wish to receive alerts for. For example, if you do not wish to receive notification for events of "minor" severity, simply uncheck the checkbox next to the "Minor" option. Selecting "None" will cause you to receive notifications of events for which no severity information has been given.

Delivery Options

This section allows you to choose your delivery options for receiving notifications. Presently email and SMS text message alerts are supported. Some delivery options require that you enter additional information under your My i-TRAFFIC profile (such as a cell phone number for text message alerts) before they will appear on the page.

Help - Manage Route

To create a personal route, enter the addresses of your desired start point and destination, and then click on the "Generate Route" button. Your route will be displayed in the map for you to review before saving.

Alternatively, you can create a route by selecting your start and end locations from the map. To select a start location, right click on the traffic map at the desired location and choose an option from the menu that appears. Then do the same for your desired end location.

To edit your route, simply enter new addresses or drag and drop the map markers that have been placed. If you drag and drop a marker, select an option from the menu that appears.

Once you are satisfied with your route, enter a name for your route and click on the "Save" button. If you wish to leave this page without saving your changes, click on the "Cancel" button.

Help - Manage Emergency / Travel Advisories Alert

You can select which region(s) you wish to receive emergency and travel advisory alerts for using the checkboxes on the page.


Delivery Options

This section allows you to choose your delivery options for receiving notifications. Presently email and SMS text message alerts are supported. Some delivery options require that you enter additional information under your My i-TRAFFIC profile (such as a cell phone number for text message alerts) before they will appear on the page.

Help - My i-TRAFFIC Preferences

On this page you can set your personal My i-TRAFFIC settings. You can choose your default region by selecting one of the options from the "Region" dropdown list. This will affect which region is activated among the region selection circles on the upper right-hand corner of the page when you log in.

Once a region is selected, the information displayed throughout the website will be specific to that region. Of course, if you want to see information for another region or from all of South Africa, you can change it at any time from any page by selecting a different circle in the upper right-hand corner of any page.
